Christ’s Mediation Is for the Elect Alone (Chapter 8, Paragraph 10)

“This number and order of offices is necessary…”
This refers back to Christ’s roles as Prophet, Priest, and King—each is essential to the work of redemption. If He were only a teacher, we would know truth but not be saved. If He were only a priest, we’d be forgiven but not ruled in righteousness. If He were only a king, we’d be ruled but never reconciled. All three offices are necessary and inseparable.
“…for in respect of our ignorance, we stand in need of His prophetical office…”
We are not born wise in the things of God. We need illumination. As Prophet, Christ reveals the truth of salvation—He makes God known (John 1:18) and leads us in truth (John 14:6).
“…and in respect of our alienation from God, and imperfection of the best of our services, we need His priestly office…”
Our sin has alienated us from God, and even our best efforts are tainted. We need Christ’s atoning death and ongoing intercession to be accepted before the Father (Heb. 7:25).
“…to reconcile and present us unto God acceptable…”
It is not our obedience or repentance that makes us acceptable—it is Christ. He is the only ground of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18–21).
“…and in respect to our averseness and utter inability to return to God, and for our rescue and security from our spiritual adversaries, we need His kingly office…”
We are not only weak but resistant. We do not seek God naturally—we resist Him (Rom. 3:11). We also face powerful enemies: sin, Satan, and the world. As King, Christ conquers them and subdues our rebellious hearts (Ps. 110:3; Col. 2:15).
“…to convince, subdue, draw, uphold, deliver, and preserve us to His heavenly kingdom.”
This sweeping list summarizes Christ’s kingly power over the entire life of the believer:
He convicts us of sin.
He subdues our resistance.
He draws us to Himself (John 6:44).
He upholds us in trials.
He delivers us from evil.
He preserves us to the end.
Salvation is not merely a past event—it is a continual work of grace under the reign of King Jesus.
Application for the Believer:
Rejoice that Christ is not a distant figurehead but your personal Prophet, Priest, and King. As Prophet, He teaches you the truth. As Priest, He reconciles you to the Father and continually intercedes. As King, He rules in love and power, conquering your sin and guiding you to glory. Your salvation is secure not because you are strong, but because Christ is faithful. Submit to His Word, trust in His intercession, and walk in obedience under His reign. You belong to the One who will preserve you unto His heavenly kingdom. Rest in His perfect and complete mediatorship—just for you.
