Matthew 7:21-23
The people Jesus rejects in Matthew 7 are not spiritual outsiders. They are insiders. They are active, vocal, and confident. They preach, they perform, they minister, and they invoke Christ’s name freely. Yet Jesus declares them lawless.
This exposes one of the most dangerous errors in the church: confusing activity with obedience.
Activity Is Not Submission
Jesus states the criterion without ambiguity: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father.” The issue is not effort; it is authority.
Scripture confirms this repeatedly:
“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46)
Religious activity can be impressive while remaining fundamentally rebellious. A person may serve Christ’s cause while rejecting Christ’s rule. God does not accept service that bypasses submission.
The Illusion of Spiritual Productivity
Religious busyness creates the illusion of health. It fills calendars, earns approval, and produces visible results. Yet none of these things require regeneration. A man may be highly active in Christian ministry while remaining spiritually dead.
Jesus addressed this deception directly:
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life… yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40)
Knowledge without submission does not lead to life; it leads to condemnation. The more truth one handles without obedience, the greater the accountability.
Works That God Rejects
The most sobering truth in this passage is not that Jesus rejects unbelievers, but that He rejects workers. They claim miracles, exorcisms, and preaching done in His name. Jesus does not dispute their activity. He disputes their legitimacy.
Scripture explains why:
“Without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6)
Works that do not flow from saving faith are not neutral. They are offensive. They attempt to replace God’s appointed means of salvation with human effort.
Lawlessness beneath Ministry
Jesus identifies the root issue: “You who practice lawlessness.” Lawlessness is not occasional failure. It is settled resistance to God’s authority.
“Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness.” (1 John 3:4)
These individuals were not ignorant of God’s will; they were indifferent to it. They wanted Christ’s power without Christ’s commands. They embraced religious influence while refusing personal holiness.
Obedience as Evidence, Not Cause
Scripture is clear: obedience does not earn salvation, but salvation always produces obedience. Where obedience is absent, regeneration never occurred.
“By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.” (1 John 2:3)
This obedience is not perfection, but direction. It is a life oriented toward submission, repentance, and holiness. A profession unaccompanied by obedience is empty; no matter how active.
The Danger of Substitute Righteousness
Religious activity often becomes a substitute for repentance. Instead of dealing with sin, people bury themselves in service. Instead of surrendering their will, they increase their workload. This does not honor God; it evades Him.
Scripture warns:
“They have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.” (Romans 10:2)
Zeal without truth is not admirable. It is destructive.
Christ Will Not Be Bartered With
Jesus does not negotiate on the final day. He does not weigh works against obedience. He does not reward effort that rejects authority. He exposes it.
“Whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” (Romans 14:23)
No amount of religious labor compensates for a heart that refuses Christ’s rule (Lordship of Christ in your life). Service cannot replace surrender. Activity cannot replace obedience.
The Only Questions That Matters
The question is not how much you have done, but why you have done it. Does your obedience flow from a regenerated heart, or does your activity function as a shield against conviction? Religious activity without regenerate obedience does not lead to reward. It leads to rejection.
