God the Father: Knowing the First Person of the Trinity
Chosen in Love
Ephesians 1:4–5 tells us plainly:
“He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world… In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ…”
Before creation. Before sin. Before any work or merit, the Father set His sovereign love on His people.
This is the doctrine of election—not dry philosophy, but the blazing center of divine grace.
Election Is the Father’s Initiative
We do not choose God first—He chooses us.
Jesus said:
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you…” (John 15:16)
This doesn’t eliminate human responsibility, but it does exalt divine initiative. The Father, not man, is the author of salvation.
Romans 9:16:
“So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”
Election Is Rooted in Love, Not Performance
God didn’t choose you because of future faith, good deeds, or potential usefulness.
Deuteronomy 7:7–8, speaking of Israel, applies to all His chosen:
“It was not because you were more in number… but it is because the Lord loves you…”
His choice is not reactionary, but relational—freely given, eternally secured.
Election Is Unto Adoption
God’s choice is not merely to rescue—it’s to bring you into His family.
Ephesians 1:5:
“He predestined us for adoption…”
Election is not an abstract concept—it is the Father saying: “You will be Mine. I will bring you home.”
It’s not mechanical—it’s deeply personal.
Election Produces Humility
Romans 11:5–6 reminds us:
“If it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works…”
Election silences boasting. It declares that salvation is of the Lord from beginning to end. This doctrine humbles the proud, and exalts the mercy of the Father.
Election Leads to Worship
Paul’s teaching on election in Ephesians 1 doesn’t end in argument—it ends in adoration:
“To the praise of His glorious grace…” (Eph. 1:6)
When we understand that we were chosen not because of us—but in spite of us—we cannot help but worship.
Election Brings Assurance
Romans 8:33:
“Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?”
If the Father chose you, then no one can un-choose you. Your salvation is not held by your grip on Him, but His grip on you.
Election doesn’t lead to arrogance—it leads to assurance.
Common Objections Addressed
1. “Isn’t that unfair?”
Not at all. The wonder is not that God chooses some—it’s that He chooses anyone. All deserve judgment. That He elects any to salvation is grace, not injustice.
2. “Doesn’t that kill evangelism?”
Not at all. Election fuels evangelism, because we know God will draw His sheep through the preaching of the Gospel (John 10:27; Acts 18:10).
3. “How do I know I’m elect?”
Believe in Christ. Trust in Him. Election is not a mystery to unlock—it’s a comfort to receive, revealed by your faith in the Son.
Practical Implications of Election
1. Confidence in Prayer
If the Father chose you before time, He hears you now in time.
2. Endurance in Trials
Election reminds you that suffering is not abandonment—it’s preparation for glory (Rom. 8:29–30).
3. Love for Others
The elect love because they have been loved. They forgive because they have been forgiven. Election produces humility—not harshness.
Conclusion: Chosen and Cherished
The Father’s election is not a wall to keep people out—it’s a window into His heart. It shows us a love that is eternal, sovereign, and unstoppable.
You were not a mistake. You were not an afterthought.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you…” (John 15:16)
Rejoice in this: before you were born, before the world was formed, the Father loved you. And that love will never let you go.
