The Gift and Grace of Saving Faith (Chapter 14, Paragraph 1)

“The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls…”

Faith is called a grace, meaning it is something God gives—not something we produce. It is given to the elect, and its purpose is salvation. God is both the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2).

“…is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts…”

This reinforces John 6:29—faith is the work of God. It is supernatural, not a product of clever persuasion or emotional decision.

“…and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word…”

The ordinary means God uses to create faith is the preaching of Scripture (Rom. 10:17). This is why gospel proclamation is central to the life of the church.

“…by which also, and by the administration of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, prayer, and other means appointed of God, it is increased and strengthened.”

Faith is not static. Though it is granted by grace, it grows through the means of grace—preaching, sacraments, prayer, and fellowship. These are the Spirit’s tools for strengthening our trust in Christ.

Application for the Believer:

Your faith did not begin with you—it began with God. When you believed, it was because the Spirit awakened your heart. This truth should humble you and comfort you. If God gave you faith, He will preserve it. If He caused you to believe, He will help your unbelief. Use the means He provides: attend the preaching of the Word regularly, partake of the sacraments with reverence, and labor in prayer. These are not rituals—they are lifelines to strengthen your faith. And when doubt creeps in, return to the Source. Faith comes from God, grows by grace, and leads to glory.
