Immutability: The God Who Does Not Change

God’s Unchanging Nature Declared

Scripture repeatedly affirms that God does not change. Malachi 3:6 declares, “I, the LORD, do not change.” James 1:17 describes Him as the Father “with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” Unlike human beings, God is incorruptible, immortal, and eternal (Rom. 1:23). His essence and character remain the same forever.

Addressing Apparent “Changes” in God

The Bible records times when God “repented” or “relented” (e.g., Gen. 6:6; Jonah 3:10). These are not actual changes in His being but anthropomorphic expressions that help us understand His actions from our perspective. God’s eternal purpose never shifts. What seems like change is the unfolding of His consistent will within time. His omniscience and perfection ensure He never revises or improves His plan.

The Comfort of God’s Immutability

God’s immutability assures believers that His promises are secure. Hebrews 13:8 proclaims, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” His faithfulness never wavers; His mercy never fades. This truth offers stability in trials and confidence in salvation. Because God does not change, we can trust that His Word endures, His covenant holds, and His love remains steadfast forever.
