Independence: God’s Self-Existence and Aseity

God’s Self-Existence Defined

When God revealed His name to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exod. 3:14); He declared His self-existence. He is not caused, created, or dependent. John 5:26 affirms this same truth: “The Father has life in Himself.” Everything else borrows existence, but God simply is. His aseity distinguishes Him from all created beings and makes Him the fountain of all life.

Creation’s Dependence on God

While God is independent, all creation depends entirely on Him. Paul writes, “In Him we live and move and exist” (Acts 17:28). From the smallest breath to the mightiest star, everything continues only because God upholds it (Heb. 1:3). This should humble us: the One who needs nothing chose to create and sustain us. Our dependence magnifies His sufficiency.

The Comfort of God’s Independence

Because God is self-sufficient, His love and promises cannot fail. Job 22:2–3 teaches that our actions add nothing to His essence; He does not need us, yet He chooses to love us. This assures us that His faithfulness rests not on our worth but on His unchanging nature. The God who needs nothing freely gives salvation, displaying His grace all the more gloriously.
