Elohim as Creator of All Things
“In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). From the first verse of Scripture, Elohim is presented as the One who brings all things into existence by His Word. His power is unmatched, creating ex nihilo; out of nothing. The universe, vast and complex, testifies to His greatness. Unlike pagan deities bound to creation, Elohim stands above it as the sovereign Lord.
Elohim as the Powerful and Faithful God
Throughout Scripture, Elohim is linked with strength and faithfulness. He is the “living God” (Josh. 3:10), the “faithful God” (Deut. 7:9), and the “God of heaven” (Ps. 136:26). His power is not abstract but personal; directed toward sustaining His people. When the psalmist cries out to Elohim, it is with confidence that God’s might is for his refuge and deliverance. The name carries both majesty and intimacy, revealing the strong God who cares for His own.
Elohim and the Fullness of the Godhead
Though Elohim is grammatically plural, it is used with singular verbs when referring to the true God, highlighting both His unity and His fullness. This plurality of intensity allows for the later New Testament revelation of the Trinity. When God says, “Let Us make man in Our image” (Gen. 1:26), it prepares the way for the Father, Son, and Spirit revealed together as one God in three persons. Elohim therefore points to the majesty, power, and triune glory of God.
