The Father’s Love for the Son

God the Father: Knowing the First Person of the Trinity

Before Anything Was, There Was Love

John 17:24:

“You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

Before there were stars, angels, or mankind, there was love—the Father delighting in the Son.

This love is not reactive or contingent. It is eternal, essential, and unchanging. The Father has always loved the Son—and He always will.

The Trinity Is a Fellowship of Love

John 3:35:

“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.”

The Father, Son, and Spirit live in perfect unity. The Father is not distant from the Son, nor superior in worth. Instead, the Father delights in the Son with divine affection that is:

  • Infinite in intensity

  • Perfect in purity

  • Eternal in duration

At Jesus’ Baptism, the Father Spoke

Matthew 3:17:

“This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

These words were not new—they were eternal. The Father wasn’t stating a momentary feeling, but revealing an eternal truth: He is pleased with the Son.

That delight did not increase with miracles or wane in the Garden. It has always been full.

Jesus Lived in the Father's Love

John 15:10:

“I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.”

Every act of Jesus’ earthly obedience flowed from confidence in His Father’s love. He didn’t strive for approval—He served from approval.

His mission was born out of love and aimed to glorify the One who sent Him.

The Cross Was Grounded in Trinitarian Love

John 10:17:

“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life…”

Even in Gethsemane and at Calvary, the Father’s love did not falter. The Son was not abandoned emotionally. Though He bore wrath, He remained the Father’s Beloved.

Isaiah 53:10 says it pleased the Lord to crush Him—not with cruelty, but with redemptive purpose.

The Resurrection Is the Father’s Vindication

Romans 1:4:

“[He] was declared to be the Son of God in power… by His resurrection…”

The Father raised the Son—not just to break death, but to exalt the Beloved. His love never faded—it only shone brighter in victory.

The Father Exalts the Son Forever

Philippians 2:9:

“Therefore God has highly exalted Him…”

The Father didn’t only send the Son—He glorifies the Son, giving Him the name above every name.

One day every knee will bow—not just because Jesus is Judge, but because the Father has honored Him as Lord.

How This Love Shapes Our Salvation

John 17:26:

“That the love with which You have loved Me may be in them…”

The Father’s love for the Son is the basis for:

  • Our election (Eph. 1:4–5)

  • Our redemption (Rom. 3:25–26)

  • Our adoption (Gal. 4:4–6)

  • Our glorification (Rom. 8:29)

We are saved not because we are lovable, but because the Father delights in the Son—and we are in Him.

What This Means for Us

1. Our Salvation Is Secure

The Father will never stop loving the Son—and therefore never stop loving those united to Him.

2. Our Worship Is Elevated

We don’t worship abstract deity—we join the eternal delight of the Father in the Son.

3. Our Fellowship Is Real

We are brought into this divine love. We are not spectators—we are participants.

Conclusion: Love Without Beginning or End

You were created, redeemed, and adopted because the Father loves the Son.

That love defines eternity.

That love explains the cross.

That love secures your future.

So lift your eyes—and behold the Son in whom the Father is well pleased.

And rejoice that, because you are in Him, the Father says the same of you.

“Behold My servant, whom I uphold, My chosen, in whom My soul delights…” (Isaiah 42:1)
