Faith as the Foundation of Relationship with God
The Scriptures make it clear: before anyone can draw near to God, they must first believe that He exists (Heb. 11:6). Faith is not wishful thinking but confident trust in the God who reveals Himself. This is why Scripture consistently contrasts the believer with the fool who says in his heart, “There is no God” (Ps. 14:1). To reject God is to embrace spiritual blindness; to believe in Him is to begin the path of wisdom (Prov. 9:10). God demands faith because He alone is ultimate reality, and acknowledgment of His existence is the only true starting point for life.
The Nature of Saving Faith
Biblical faith is more than intellectual agreement; it involves reliance on God’s promises. The faith commended in Hebrews 11 is an active trust that produces obedience. Noah built the ark because he trusted God’s warning (Heb. 11:7). Abraham left his homeland because he believed God’s call (Heb. 11:8). Faith responds to God’s Word with action, resting in His character even when circumstances seem uncertain. Paul echoes this truth in Romans 10:17: “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” True faith is a gift of God, imparted through His Word and confirmed by the Spirit.
Faith Pleases God and Sustains His People
Why is faith necessary? Because it honors God’s truthfulness and goodness. To believe God is to declare that His Word is trustworthy. Moreover, faith sustains the believer through trials. When the psalmist’s heart was troubled, he declared, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD” (Ps. 27:13). Faith pleases God because it reflects dependence on Him rather than self. It also glorifies Him as the faithful rewarder of those who seek Him (Heb. 11:6). Ultimately, faith in God’s existence finds its climax in faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, who is the exact representation of His nature (Heb. 1:3).
