Why True Knowledge of God Requires Revelation and Regeneration

The Limits of Human Effort

Paul explains that fallen humanity “suppresses the truth in unrighteousness” (Rom. 1:18). The natural mind is hostile toward God and unable to grasp His truth (1 Cor. 2:14). Though creation testifies clearly to His existence, sinful man distorts this witness, exchanging the glory of the Creator for idols (Rom. 1:23). No philosophical reasoning or moral striving can overcome this blindness. Apart from God’s intervention, humanity remains lost in ignorance and rebellion.

Revelation as the Foundation of True Knowledge

God has graciously provided His Word as the sure foundation for knowing Him. “All Scripture is inspired by God” (2 Tim. 3:16), bearing His own authority and truth. Through the Bible, God speaks clearly about His character, His works, and His will. Without revelation, people invent gods in their own image. With revelation, we know the living God as He has chosen to make Himself known. His Word is the lamp that exposes human error and guides believers into truth (Ps. 119:105).

Regeneration as the Key to Understanding

Even with revelation, the human heart must be transformed. Jesus told Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). The Spirit opens eyes to behold God’s glory in Christ (2 Cor. 4:6). Faith itself is a gift, “granted… to believe” (Phil. 1:29). Regeneration enables not only intellectual acknowledgment but personal trust and obedience. True knowledge of God is therefore both external—through His Word—and internal—through the Spirit’s renewing work.
