Yahweh Compounds: God Who Provides, Heals, and Leads

Yahweh-yireh: The Lord Provides

When Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, God provided a ram in his place. Abraham named the place Yahweh-yireh, “The Lord Will Provide” (Gen. 22:14). This name points not only to God’s faithfulness in that moment but ultimately to His provision of Christ, the Lamb of God, sacrificed in the place of sinners. Every need is met in Him, who is God’s perfect and final provision.

Yahweh-nissi: The Lord Is My Banner

After Israel’s victory over Amalek, Moses built an altar and called it Yahweh-nissi, “The Lord Is My Banner” (Exod. 17:15). A banner is raised in battle to rally and lead the people. God Himself goes before His people, guaranteeing their triumph. In Christ, we see this truth fulfilled as He conquers sin, Satan, and death, leading His people to everlasting victory.

Yahweh-shalom: The Lord Is Peace

When the angel of the Lord called Gideon to deliver Israel, Gideon built an altar and named it Yahweh-shalom, “The Lord Is Peace” (Judg. 6:24). God brought peace to His people through His presence and deliverance. In Christ, the Prince of Peace, this name finds ultimate fulfillment. He reconciles sinners to God (Rom. 5:1) and gives a peace that surpasses understanding (Phil. 4:7).
